August 26-Women’s Equality Day

Today is a day commemorate the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment and women’s suffrage in the United States.  Gaining the vote was an 150 year struggle for women, one that offered a promise that women’s voices would be fully resonant in our country’s decision-making, in leadership, and in power.  Women’s inequality permeates our society, affecting access to the most basic of human rights, including food. Over the last 100 years, women have continued to face heightened barriers to food security and economic stability.

August 26-‘A (Virtual) Symphony of Voices: A Celebration of Women in Philanthropy’

6pm-This special event will be broadcast on Zoom at 6 p.m. and will celebrate six outstanding women in philanthropy and one organization in Palm Beach County. The virtual event is being held on the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th amendment and will feature a special presentation about the 19th amendment by the League of Women Voters. Several talented musicians from The Symphonia will perform.  The program will begin with a live, interactive cocktail hour from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Zoom Rooms specific to each organization/individual being honored.  All guests will then join together for the main program at 7 p.m. “Our honorees for ‘A Symphony of Voices’ are some of Palm Beach County’s most influential women in philanthropy – women who embody the same spirit as the suffragettes who fought for the vote 100 years ago–seeking to empower the powerless and give a voice to the voiceless,” said Annabel Russell, Executive Director, The Symphonia. To register on EventBrite, please visit thesymphonia.org or call 561-376-3848 or email [email protected] The event is Free but Registration is required. August 26 to 31-History Ft. Lauderdale Celebrates Women’s Suffrage with “Rightfully Hers”, A New Exhibit from The National Archives

Women’s Equality Day is August 26 and History Fort Lauderdale is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment all month long with “Rightfully Hers”, a new pop-up exhibition from the National Archives. Rightfully Hers contains simple messages exploring the history of women’s voting rights before and after the 19th amendment, and its impact today. Despite decades of marches, petitions, and public debate to enshrine a woman’s right to vote in the constitution, the 19th Amendment – while an enormous milestone – did not grant voting rights for all. The challenges of its passage reverberate to the ongoing fight for gender equity today. This nationwide initiative and major exhibition explores the generations-long fight for universal woman suffrage. History Fort Lauderdale is proud to showcase a variety of annual multicultural exhibits highlighting women, African American, Caribbean and Latin artists sharing their views of history. (Permanent exhibits include “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows guests to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis.)-Open daily, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Location: History Fort Lauderdale, 231 SW Second Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301   COST: Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. Tickets are available online at http://bit.ly/HistoryFortLauderdaleTickets. For more information about History Fort Lauderdale, please call 954-463-4431 or visit us online at historyfortlauderdale.org.
