June 19-Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom (Held in West Palm Beach)-FREE Admission
12:15 PM to 2:45 PM-Join us for a joyous community-wide celebration of Juneteenth, an annual holiday to commemorate the end of legal slavery in the United States. Though officially ended in January 1863 by the Emancipation Proclamation, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865 that word reached the African American community in Texas that the Civil War had ended and that they were no longer enslaved. Texas was the last Confederate state to have the proclamation announced. Juneteenth honors the day. Admission is free for the daylong event. Opening ceremonies will feature live music and dance, drumming and poetry and other readings as well as speeches by local dignitaries, religious and civic leaders. There will be a dozen food trucks and food stands, vendors of colorful artwork, jewelry, clothing and more plus an exhibit on Palm Beach County’s Black culture and history and a sidewalk chalk art contest. Community service providers such as the United Way of Palm Beach County, 211 Helpline, and the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County will have booths. In addition, there’ll be free COVID-19 vaccinations, a voter registration drive and free take-home food boxes for the needy. The amphitheater is along S. Flagler Drive in downtown West Palm Beach. The seating area is grass. You should bring your own chair or beach blanket. We’ll meet between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m. at the north corner of Flagler at Datura St. near E.R. Bradley’s Saloon. Look for the Meetup sign. There’s parking along the streets and in the nearby public garages. The nearest are at 333 Evernia St., just south of the amphitheater, and 200 Banyan Blvd., a few blocks to the north. The Juneteenth festivities go ’til 9 p.m. and you’re welcome to stay for as long as you’d like. They’ll be capped off by a three-hour concert at 6 p.m. Held at Meyer Ampthitheater, 104 Datura Street at S. Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach (Meetup Organizer: Harvey Rosenfeld)
